Training and studies to become a gynaecologist

In order to work as a gynaecologist, you need to spend about ten years studying medicine. Well before entering a medical university, it is strongly recommended to obtain a Bac S to have the right basis. In the first year, we talk about PACES (first common year of health studies) leading to a very selective competition. The following years, 4 years to be more precise, are dedicated to basic teaching (theory and practice) on prevention, therapeutics and pathologies. At the end of the 5th year, the student will take a competitive examination to enter the internship with a specialty in gynaecology. They will then have to continue their studies for 4 to 5 years to obtain a diploma of specialised studies (DES) in medical gynaecology or obstetrics, depending on the choice they have previously made.

The scope of a gynaecologist's work

The gynaecologist works in a public or private hospital, a university hospital, a private practice or a clinic. They take a very close interest in the female genitalia in an attempt to unravel its mysteries and thus treat related pathologies and diseases. There are two specialities in gynaecology: - Medical gynaecology: branch dealing with the most common pathologies (STIs, cancer prevention...) and taking care of the regular follow-up of women; - Obstetrics gynaecology: branch specialising in the accompaniment and monitoring of pregnancy and all associated problems, and in the treatment of infertility (sterility). A gynaecologist can carry out many tasks depending on his or her speciality: screening for STIs/STDs (sexually transmitted infections/diseases), prescribing contraception, regular monitoring for the prevention of female cancers (ovary, uterus, breast, etc.), treatment of infertility with assisted reproduction methods, pregnancy checks, intervention during childbirth in the event of complications, treatment of post-natal care, etc.

Why call in a gynaecologist?

When you have pain in your lower abdomen, it means that there may be problems with your reproductive system or uterus. It is then strongly recommended to consult a gynaecologist to avoid that it gets worse. Otherwise, he is usually consulted for vulvar itching and delayed menstruation (amenorrhoea).

How to find a gynaecologist?

Using a directory such as StarOfService makes it easy to find a gynaecologist. By following the instructions on the screen, you can quickly get in touch with many gynaecological specialists and find one who can answer your questions in your region or city.

The fees of a gynaecologist

The cost of a consultation with a gynaecologist differs according to the case and the sector of agreement of the practitioner. As a general rule, the cost is between €28 and €33 and is reimbursed by the health insurance scheme at a rate of 70% if the patient goes through a health care pathway, i.e. by going first to her GP who will refer her to the specialist, or by going directly to the specialist after having declared her GP. Otherwise, only 30% of the cost is covered, which means a difference of almost €12 on the basis of a €28 consultation.

How to choose a gynaecologist?

In order to choose a gynaecologist, one can look at his or her background and experience in his or her specialisation. Alternatively, you can rely on the opinions of those around you (word of mouth) as well as the recommendations of your GP regarding the various specialists in your region or town. Gynaecologists who are covered by a health insurance scheme are also more affordable than those who are not, as their consultations are reimbursed by the health insurance scheme.
