Urology is a branch of health care that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, urethra, ureters and bladder). It also deals with the male reproductive organs (penis, testicles, scrotum, prostate, etc.). Since health problems in these parts of the body can happen to anyone, urological health is important. Urology has proven to be one of the most innovative surgical specialties. Urologists still use traditional surgical methods, but they have also pioneered modern, high-tech, fibre-optic and endoscopic techniques (sometimes called minimally invasive surgery). Urology accounts for one tenth (10%) of GP consultations. A quarter (25%) of all surgical referrals to hospital are for urological conditions. In recent years, the number of referrals to hospital for urological conditions has increased by one fifth (20%).
