Getting a tattoo is a way of imprinting on your skin decorative, symbolic or ethnic designs that have a special meaning for you. The tattooist listens to his clients to transcribe their wishes on their skin while taking into account their feasibility. With the help of a demographer (an electric machine with a needle that inserts coloured pigments under the skin), he pierces the surface layer of the skin, between 2 and 4 millimetres deep.

Training and studies to become a tattooist

In France, there is currently only one recognised training course that allows you to work as a tattoo artist. It is the official diploma of tattoo artist of level Bac+2 delivered by the French School of Tattooing. This training also includes a certificate of compulsory training for the exercise of the profession and the certificate of prevention and civic aid level 1 (PSC1). Otherwise, the apprenticeship is generally self-taught with an experienced tattooist, as an employee starting out in a tattoo parlour or as a 6-month training course. Some equipment suppliers also offer training courses to tattoo artists in the use of their equipment. If one follows a course in self-taught, it will be necessary to follow a training in the rules of hygiene and salubrity with an authorized organization of a duration of 21 hours at least, distributed on 3 consecutive days.

The field of intervention of a tattooist

The tattooist performs his services in standardised premises with a room specially dedicated to tattoos. The first thing he does when a customer pushes the doors of his salon is to ask for his identity papers to check if he is of age. If not, he must have parental authorisation. Otherwise, he does not carry out tattoos for pregnant women. Before starting to work, he carries out several tasks: - Provide mandatory information to the clients so that they can make the right choice (pain, healing time, risks of infection...); - Advise them on the technical feasibility of a design and do their best to meet their expectations; - Suggest that they choose one from a wide range of designs in the catalogue and try to reproduce it as faithfully as possible; - Prepare the material in compliance with health regulations (sterilisation) - single-use inks and needles; - Wear gloves, glasses and a mask. In addition to the realization of tattoos, certain tattooers also propose other services. Thus, it is frequent to have a piercing, to have rings or other jewels placed on various parts of the body in a tattoo parlour. The rules of hygiene must be scrupulously applied just as for tattoos.

Why use a tattoo artist?

A tattoo artist is usually called in to mark the body with a design that has a special meaning. This can be a symbol, an ethnic design, a quote, etc. Moreover, the tattooist is the only one entitled to perforate the surface layer of the skin with a demographer.

How to find a tattoo artist?

In addition to word-of-mouth which is a very practical method to find a tattoo artist, there is a simpler and more efficient way: use a directory like StarOfService on which several artisans are listed. You can easily find one in your region or city by following the steps indicated on the screen.

Tattoo artist's fees

The prices charged by tattoo artists are based on the amount of time spent on the tattoo. The size of the design is closely related to the price - the larger and more elaborate the design, the more time and cost will be involved. The average tattooist charges between €80 and €160 per hour, depending on his reputation and the geographical location of his salon. For a small tattoo, it will be at least 50 € while a medium size tattoo will cost about 100 €, but this can vary greatly.

How to choose a tattoo artist?

In our entourage, we inevitably have a tattooed person. We can then ask them where they got their tattoo if we think it's pretty, otherwise we won't. The best choice is to find out what you like. If you want to get a tribal tattoo, for example, you won't go to a tattoo artist who specialises in Asian designs. Otherwise, it is also possible to see the artists at work in their salon, which can give you a first idea of whether or not the hygiene is irreproachable.

Questions to ask a tattooist at the first contact

- How many years of experience do you have as a tattooist ? - Did you follow a specific training ? - What is your preferred style? - Can you show me some of your work ? - How much do you charge for your services ?
